What am I talking about? The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya of course! I know I caught on a bit later than most, but I am seriously addicted to the antics of Haruhi Suzumiya. I have just finished watching the entire series in airing order (what the?!), and am halfway through rewatching it again in chronological order, and I must say, I’m laughing just as hard this time around as I did the first time! Hands down my favourite episode is the baseball one with the bat reconfigured by Yuki to work in “Homing Mode” and the ball enchanted to land perfectly in the keepers glove, no matter how wide the pitch is. Kyon’s comment about “the fate of the World rests on my pitching” and that “the World really isn’t worth much these days” is classic.

I love the character of Haruhi herself. She is so spontanious and crazy and just so full of energy and doesn’t care what other people think of her that it makes me quite jealous (though I would happily live without the blackmailing everyone to getting everything I want business). I find the aspect of her inner conflicts intriguing – her desire to find all that is bizaar and paranormal in the world, and yet at the same time be aware logically that they can’t possibly exist. It seems her inner most desires are out of touch with her conscious desires, as everything around her happens as a result of her will, and yet, she is constantly surprised by what is going on. She has a lot of emotional inner turmoil that she has trouble venting.

K yon on the other hand is a fantastic contrast to the crazy Haruhi, with his quiet, sarcastic non-believing nature. Despite his disinterest in the paranormal, poor Kyon has been through far more abnormal experiences than Haruhi could ever hope to have. He has a great wit, and his running commentary is great. Haruhi and Kyon are such a fantastic couple! *^_^*

At the moment I am reading through the translated versions of the Haruhi Suzumiya novels and they are just fantastic. The anime storyline is almost identical in both content and dialogue, which really captures the characters personalities in the novel. It’s just so much fun to read! The story is so fun and unique that its no wonder the author received such a prestigious award for it. It definitely gets all my votes!!
