so-over-mmo-games

For the last 12 months Eastonroyce and I have been watching boxset after boxset of the Stargate TV series. This is all old hat for Eastonroyce – he has seen all the episodes before, but for the most part, all episodes are new to me. I originally started watching the show years ago after falling in love with the original movie (I even have the Stargate Gameboy game!), but alas, I went to boarding school and no one in the girls common room would let me watch it. (Actually, I was forbidden from touching the tv at all after making everyone sit through 2 Episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion). We are currently up to Season 8 of SG-1 (just saw the first episode with Vaala and I already adore her character!), and we have just started watching Stargate Atlantis Season 1 (about half-way through and I’m already hooked!). Stargate is just so cool! I love it so much.

Anyway, just last week I was thinking, ‘how cool would it be if they made a Stargate game?!’ Not another gameboy game, though I gotta admit, I love the music in it, but a proper, awesome graphics PC game! And whaddya know – today I find out Stargate Worlds is in development. My heart lept with joy!

…for a moment. Then I realised it is a Massive Multiplayer Online game.

*sigh* Don’t get me wrong, I love the concept of MMO games – like being able to explore huge maps and team up with people on the other side of the world – but the cost, time and dedication required to play them is just not practical. I have lost a lot of friends to online games and have vowed never to allow myself to succumb to such an addiction. Its unhealthy, the game only rewards you for time spent playing, and you forget what it is like to live in the real world.

Which is why I am so disappointed about Stargate Worlds. The game looks fantastic! Using the Stargate you get to go on missions to different worlds and explore places and meet races found in the Stargate tv series! (And they have ASGARD! I love the Asgard!). The graphics are beautiful. The following are screenshots of the game I found on the official Stargate Worlds website.

Doesn’t it look cool?! Which makes it all the more disappointing when I realise I won’t be able to play it. I have neither the money or the time to invest in it. If only they made it a single player game, then I could play it occasionally and still get the full benefit… Oh well. Back to watching Stargate only for me.
