To tell the truth, the whole point in me getting my blog up and running so quick is just so I could rave about the Transformers live action movie!! I gotta admit, I am a HUGE fan of the original Transformers Generation One cartoon series which aired in the 1980’s. Hey, I even borrowed out every single ancient VHS tape of all the Transformers episodes I could scrounge up at the local video store several years back, and spent a week or so manually copying them from one VHS tape to another. The quality was terrible, but I was desperate. Thats how big a fan I am.
Besides Optimus (naturally), Bumblebee (yay!) was always my favourite. Well, Bumblebee and RC as she was the only female transformer and a pink cadillac at that. So when I heard there would be a live action movie, well, I was ecstatic. If they stuffed it up I would be be sending out as many angry emails to the directors as Hasbro received from angry parents whose kids were devestated after they killed off Optimus Prime in the animated movie. So I had very high expectations for it to live up to.
Admittedly, the first quarter of the movie had me worried. The story seemed to be rapidly falling into the trap of crappy dialogue and stupid horny teenager jokes. I was almost considering walking out at one point. But after the arrival of the Autobots things got better. A LOT better. All my favourite transformers appeared, and the characterisation was just so true to the cartoon. Optimus Prime, Jazz (who is just awesome in the series), and Bumblebee were all in it. Plus other favourites Ratchet the medic and Ironhide the trigger-happy weapons specialist. They were all just as cool as they are in the series! The true icing on the cake was the original voice actor for Optimus Prime using the classic line “Autobots, roll out!” ^_^
I was a little sceptical at first about changing Bumblee from the classic beetle into a chevy. Apparantly this may have been due to the same problem Hasbro had when dealing with Voltswagon – they refused to allow beetles to be used in the toy product line as they didn’t want the Voltswagon name associated with war fighting toys. Oh well. I think using the Chevy Camaro Concept 08 was great. Damn – I want one of those cars! Makes my poor little Holden Commodore seem so crappy in comparison
I’m thinking of putting my bumper sticker I picked up at Animania on the back of my car:
“My other car turns into a 15 foot, giant transforming Robot” *sigh*
Transformers Rules!
